Q: The window the button opens is blank. Why?
A: The application is a Google Web App embedded in this site. JavaScript must be enabled, and you must be logged into your Google account.
Q: Does Gmail Explorer work with non-Gmail email addresses?
A: Your email account must be hosted through Gmail for Gmail Explorer to analyze it. This is because the program uses a Google-hosted script running Google APIs, so it can parse your Gmail without actually sharing your email contents. There are no restrictions on the email address of the contact you enter, as long as the emails are in your inbox.
Q: Do you read my email or store any information about me?
A: Absolutely not! A Google-hosted script acting within your own account crawls through your Gmail, analyzes the text, and presents a summary back to you. Your email is never transmitted out of your account. You are authorizing the Google App to run as you only, on your behalf. As the author of the app, I do NOT have access to the sessions you run when you log in and run the app under your account. The app would need to request additional permissions in order to transfer any information out of your own account. Your Gmail stays between you and Google (and if you don't trust Google with your email, I suggest you start using a different email service :)
Q: Is the quoted text in a reply on a thread included in a message's word count?
A: Gmail Explorer attempts to exclude quoted replies and forwarded text from its analyses, in order to accurately reflect the writing of the individual in question. It is generally quite accurate in doing this. However, in some cases, especially with contacts who are not on Gmail, there may be some error in this process.
Q: How can I share my reports with my friends?
A: I don't have a great solution up for this yet. If I tried to embed social media sharing widgets into the app, Google would see that a way to transmit information from the app to an external party, which is not allowed at the strict permission levels set for your privacy (see above question on privacy). For now, either save the web frame or take a screen shot.
Q: Can Gmail Explorer diagnose relationship or personality disorders?
A: Gmail Explorer is to be used for entertainment purposes only.
Q: This is too much information. What if I just want a simple score to tell me if someone loves me?
A: Try the Lovealyzer for Gmail
Q: Why doesn't Gmail Explorer do X?
A: Because I have a "real job" teaching text analytics as a university, and this is just something I share for fun when I have time -- I'm a data scientist, not a Web developer, so making things Web-friendly can be a challenge (please forgive the awkward layout of some sections of the reports-- I'm working on it). That said, I'm working on adding more advanced reports that draw much more deeply from the text, based on the latest in psychology research. Suggestions welcome.
